The Dodge lineup has already changed quite a bit over the past couple of years, but it’s just the beginning. Right now one of the biggest things happening for the brand is the introduction of the Dodge Hornet. This model debuted as a brand-new addition to the lineup last year with its initial GT variant, which is a gas-only version of the compact crossover. Now this year, the 2024 Dodge Hornet GT is joined by the brand’s first-ever electrified performance vehicle, the 2024 Dodge Hornet R/T. Thanks to these two models, the Dodge brand can now claim that it produces both the most powerful crossover in its segment with the Hornet R/T as well as the fastest and most powerful gas-only compact crossover on the market. But today we thought we’d highlight the differences between the two models, so you can decide exactly which version of the 2024 Dodge Hornet is right for you.
The biggest difference between the two different Dodge Hornet variants is, of course, their powertrains. The new Dodge Hornet R/T joins the lineup this year, bringing its hybrid-electric powertrain to the mix. The Hornet R/T tethers a 1.3L turbocharged engine to a 90-kW electric induction motor and a 15.5-kWh lithium ion battery pack. Altogether, this enables the Hornet R/T to generate 288 horsepower alongside 383 pound-feet of torque. It can also travel for up to 32 all-electric miles.
Alternatively, the Dodge Hornet GT returns this year with its 2.0L turbocharged Hurricane4 inline four-cylinder engine, which is capable of generating up to 268 hp and 295 lb-ft. of torque. As you can see, both models perform incredibly well. As we mentioned, the Hornet GT is the most powerful gas-only compact crossover on the market. However, the Hornet R/T’s hybrid-electric powertrain, which is tethered to a six-speed automatic transmission in comparison to the GT’s electronic nine-speed auto, does enable it to generate more power and perform even better.
While the biggest and most obvious difference between the two Hornet variants is their powertrains, there are plenty of other ways in which the two models differ. For example the Hornet R/T offers the class-exclusive PowerShot feature, which enables it to add an extra 30 horsepower for a short time and accelerate from 0-60 in 5.6 seconds. It also offers three hybrid driving modes in addition to Sport Mode, which are Hybrid, Electric and E-Save. Sport Mode is a little different between the two variants as well, with the R/T version offering some hybrid system optimizations as well as the button being located on the center console instead of the steering wheel. Here’s a list of other differences between the two versions:
The most important thing to note is that, with the exception of those features directly related to the powertrain and performance, all content that is available on the R/T is available on the GT and vice versa. Some things might come standard on R/T while only being available on GT, but you can get packages or add-ons to get everything the R/T offers if you wish.
