2026 Jeep Cherokee vs. Grand Cherokee

Published on Sep 15, 2026 by Jim Glover Creative Team

For the 2026 model year, the legendary Jeep Cherokee was reintroduced to the lineup, but this time exclusively as a hybrid vehicle. We’re excited for Jeep to usher in this new era of electrification, with the lineup now featuring two all-electric models and this new hybrid Cherokee. But the even more iconic Grand Cherokee remains a conventional gas-only vehicle, so let’s see how the two crossovers compare to one another, starting of course with their powertrains.

Powertrain & Fuel Efficiency

Obviously these two vehicles are very different under the hood. The all-new 2026 Jeep Cherokee compact crossover is powered by a 1.6L Turbo Hybrid Electric Vehicle powertrain tethered to an Electronic Variable Transmission (EVT). Altogether, the hybrid system is able to generate up to 210 horsepower alongside 230 pound-feet of torque. It offers over 500 miles of total driving range, thanks to a very impressive 42 miles per gallon through the city and 33 mpg on the highway, for a combined fuel economy of 37 mpg.

Its big sibling, the midsize 2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee, delivers a duo of classic powertrain options, each paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission (8AT). The standard engine is a 3.6L Pentastar V6 capable of producing 293 hp and 260 lb-ft. of torque, but those looking for a performance upgrade can opt instead for the 2.0L Hurricane Turbo I-4, which boosts performance to 324 hp and 332 lb-ft.

Interior Dimensions & Cargo Space

Both the compact Cherokee and midsize Grand Cherokee can seat up to five people, and if you want to opt for the Grand Cherokee L you can add a third row of seating to boost that up to seven passengers, but their actual interior dimensions vary greatly.

The 2026 Cherokee provides 107.4 cubic feet of passenger volume with 33.6 cu. ft. behind the rear seating. If you need more cargo space than seats, you can drop the second row flat to expand your capacity up to 68.3 cu. ft.

The 2026 Grand Cherokee, on the other hand, offers 145 cu. ft. of passenger volume, 38.0 cu. ft. behind the second row, and 71.0 cu. ft. with the rear seats folded. Then the Grand Cherokee L boosts things even further, with 151.9 cu. ft. of passenger space and 84.6 cu. ft. of maximum cargo capacity. Of course, its standard capacity is much lower, with only 17.2 cu. ft. behind the third row of seats. But if you drop those seats flat, you’ll have 46.9 cu. ft. of space and still have four seats to fill.

Capabilities & Towing Ratings

The last thing we’ll touch on are each model's capabilities, as a majority of the features and content found throughout both vehicles are very similar. The new 2026 Cherokee offers the Jeep Active Drive I 4x4 System alongside the Selec-Terrain Traction Management System. This setup manages torque distribution across varying road surfaces while supporting a maximum towing capacity of 3,500 pounds when properly equipped.

The 2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee expands off-road options with three available 4x4 systems: Quadra-Trac I, Quadra-Trac II, and Quadra-Drive II with a Rear Electronic Limited-Slip Differential (eLSD). Available Quadra-Lift Air Suspension allows for variable ground clearance adjustments. When equipped with the Trailer Tow Package, the Grand Cherokee offers a maximum towing rating of 6,200 pounds.
