The 2026 Jeep Recon was introduced as the brand’s first true all-electric vehicle, but it’s not Jeep’s first foray into electrification. The past few years saw the introduction and a sharp rise in popularity of the plug-in hybrid 4xe models, chief among which was the Jeep Wrangler 4xe. That model laid the groundwork for the brand-new Recon and was discontinued after the 2025 model year to make room for the new SUV. But how does the 2026 Jeep Recon differ from its plug-in predecessor? We’re here to compare the new vs. the old today, so keep reading to learn more.
Powertrain & Performance
Obviously the most significant difference between these two models are their powertrains, so let’s start by taking a look at those. As mentioned, the Jeep Wrangler 4xe was a Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV). The 2025 model was powered by a 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder engine tethered to dual electric motors and a 17.3-kWh battery pack. This enabled the vehicle to generate up to 375 horsepower alongside 470 pound-feet of torque, while delivering up to 21 miles of all-electric driving.
The brand-new 2026 Jeep Recon is, of course, a true Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV). It has no traditional combustion engine beneath its hood, but is instead powered solely by dual electric drive modules (EDMs) tethered to a large 100-kWh battery pack. For those who don’t think electric can deliver as much power as gas engines, the Recon produces a mind-blowing 650 horsepower alongside 620 lb-ft. of torque. This gives it a 0–60 mph time of 3.6 seconds, which it can utilize at the drop of a dime while driving up to 250 miles on a single full charge.
Off-Road Capability
Naturally both vehicles are built atop generations of Jeep DNA, which means they were both engineered to tackle rough terrain and trails, but that doesn’t mean they approach off-roading with the same mechanical philosophy. The Wrangler 4xe stays true to classic off-road traditions, as it was built on a traditional ladder frame, featured Dana 44 front and rear axles, mechanical transfer cases (Command-Trac or Rock-Trac), and an electronic sway-bar disconnect on Rubicon models. This enabled the Wrangler 4xe to deliver unmatched wheel articulation and mechanical durability, which makes it particularly adept at extreme rock crawling or deep wilderness exploration.
The new Jeep Rubicon approaches things differently, as it was built on the modern STLA Large platform and features fully independent front and rear suspension. Instead of heavy mechanical transfer cases, the Recon manages traction electronically with the Selec-Terrain system paired with an electronic locking rear differential. This lets the SUV easily handle mud, sand, and trail obstacles with its 9.4 inches of max ground clearance while simultaneously giving it a much smoother, more refined ride for everyday driving.
Which Electrified Jeep Fits Your Lifestyle?
While the Wrangler 4xe has been discontinued, there are still used models out there you could pick up if you prefer its traditional approach. It offers flexibility with its gas-powered engine, classic Wrangler experiences like fully removable doors and fold-down windshield, and basic features and tech. Plus it delivers maximum off-road articulation which might make it the better fit for more extreme off-roading and trails.
The Recon, on the other hand, offers a futuristic cabin packed full of advanced technologies like its massive 14.5” infotainment screen and Level 2 Active Driving Assist. You’ll still get open-air freedom with removable doors and rear glass, but the windshield is fixed. If you want instant electric torque, mind-bending acceleration, and a comfortable daily commute then the Recon might be for you.
