One of the most unique and exciting features found in the Jeep Wrangler is its ability to remove the doors and roof. The Wrangler is an outdoorsy vehicle, built for off-roading and meant to be fully enjoyed through the summer months. And what better way to enjoy the summer than with exposure to the elements? You can do just that by not just taking off the roof of your Wrangler, but each of its doors as well. If you’re unsure how to do this on your own, we’ve put together the following guide to teach you.
Prepare the Jeep
The first step in the process of removing your doors and roof is to prepare your Jeep. There are a few things you need to do to make sure your Wrangler is ready.
- Ensure that you’re parked on a level surface.
- Find your Jeep Tool Kit, which comes standard with every new Wrangler.
- Roll the windows down completely to protect your glass.
Once your Jeep is ready, you can move onto removing the doors.
Remove the Doors
While not required, we recommend having a partner when removing the doors, at least the first time so that you don’t accidentally drop them or cause any damage when finding out just how heavy they are.
- Remove Hinge Pins
- For this step you’ll need the T50 Torx head driver from your tool kit.
- Use it to remove the silver bolts located on the outside of the door hinges; there are two per door.
- Once removed, store them in the dedicated bolt tray located under the rear cargo floor.
- Disconnect Wiring Harness
- Open the door and locate the plastic access panel in the footwall, near the door strap.
- Remove this panel and press the locking tab on the wiring harness, then pull down to disconnect the electronics.
- Uncheck Door Linkage
- For this step you’ll need the T40 Torx head driver from your tool kit.
- Use it to remove the bolt that holds the door check arm – which is the metal bar preventing the door from swinging too wide – to the body.
- Unhook the fabric limit strap from the hook inside the footwell.
- Lift the Door
- With the door open at a 90-degree angle, stand on the outside and lift straight up until the hinge pings slide completely out of the brackets.
- Now simply store each door in a safe place, preferably on a padded surface or a dedicated door rack for protection.
Remove the Roof
There are two different types of roof available in the Jeep Wrangler, a hardtop or a soft top. The process will differ slightly depending on which roof you have.
Hardtop
- Remove Freedom Panels
- Inside the cabin, flip the black L-shaped latches on the driver’s side panel.
- Turn the rear fastener knobs, if applicable.
- Unclip the header latches near the sun visors.
- Lift the driver’s side panel off first, followed by the passenger side.
- Disconnect Rear Hardware
- Using the T40 Torx bit, remove the six to eight bolts holding the hardtop to the bed rails in the cargo area.
- Unplug Electronics
- On the driver’s side rear corner, disconnect the wiring harness and rear wiper fluid hose.
- Lift the Top
- You will need at least two people to lift the rear hardtop section.
- Walk it back off the vehicle and store it on a specialized cart or blocks to prevent fiberglass damage.
Soft Top
- Remove Windows
- Pull the plastic retainers from the grooves along the body and vertical door surrounds.
- Once the retainers are free, slide the windows toward the rear of the vehicle to remove them from the C-channel tracks.
- Unlock Header
- From the front seats, unlatch the two header clamps above the windshield.
- Fold it Back
- From the outside, push the top back, folding it into an accordion shape.
- Ensure the fabric is tucked neatly to prevent bunching — or wind resistance, if you plan to drive with it folded down.
