Which Jeep models can you flat tow?

Published on Oct 30, 2024 by Jim Glover Creative Team

If you’re moving across the country one of the first things you might start thinking about is how to get your vehicle there if you’re going to be driving your own moving truck. Likewise, if you’re packing it all in and deciding to go on a cross-country trip in an RV, it’d probably be nice to have your everyday vehicle with you – but how do you bring it along? The best answer is through flat towing, a method of towing a vehicle behind a larger vehicle with all four wheels flat on the road. Unfortunately, not every vehicle can be flat towed, so if you own a Jeep vehicle you might be wondering which models can be flat towed. We’re here today to give you the rundown on just that!

Jeep Wrangler

The most iconic member of the Jeep brand, the Wrangler is one of the most unique vehicles on the market. It’s without a doubt the most off-road capable vehicle in the mainstream automotive industry, and just about every model can be flat towed. This makes sense since it’s the most likely vehicle for people living adventurous lifestyles to choose. If you live in an RV and travel around the country, it’d certainly be nice to be able to park your big ol’ motorhome and tackle off-road trails behind the wheel of a Wrangler.

Jeep Gladiator

It’s a similar story for the Jeep Gladiator. The Gladiator is extremely similar to the Wrangler with the added benefit of a truck bed to grant even more capabilities. The Gladiator can also be flat towed much like the Wrangler, as long as the vehicle you’re flat towing it with is appropriately sized. The Gladiator is larger and heavier than the Wrangler, so it’s important to have a vehicle large enough to tow it.

Jeep Grand Cherokee

There are many different versions of the Jeep Grand Cherokee, so whether or not yours can be flat towed is going to depend on many different factors.

  • 2WD models
    • You can flat tow 2WD Grand Cherokee models as long as you remove the driveshaft.
  • 4WD models
    • As long as your 4WD Grand Cherokee is equipped with either Quadra-Trac II or Quadra Drive II, it can be flat towed.
  • 4-low models
    • Not every 4-low model can be flat towed, bring your Grand Cherokee into us so we can better determine if flat towing is capable.
  • Grand Cherokee L
    • If you have one of the three-row Grand Cherokee L models, make sure it has Active Drive II or Quadra-Trac II and then it should be capable of flat towing.
  • 4xe models
    • The Grand Cherokee 4xe can be flat towed but it will require extra steps, so be sure to contact somebody before trying to do things on your own.

Jeep Compass

Historically, the Jeep Compass has not been capable of flat towing, but that changed with the 2024 model year as the Jeep Compass can now be flat towed as well.

Discontinued Models

If you have an older Jeep model such as some of those that are no longer in production, there’s a chance you can flat tow them as well. The best way to tell for sure if your Jeep vehicle is capable of flat towing is to check out your owner’s manual as it should tell you. Certain Cherokee, Patriot and Liberty models are a few examples of discontinued models that could be flat towed.
