If you’ve spent any time on our blog or surfing around our website, then there’s a good chance you’ve noticed an uptick in content regarding flat towing. Flat towing is an increasingly popular activity that allows you to tow your personal vehicle behind a much larger recreational vehicle, such as a motorhome. It’s a great way to make sure you still get to bring along your everyday drive even when you travel cross country in an RV. Unfortunately, not every vehicle is properly equipped to be flat towed, so it’s important to make sure you know whether or not your vehicle is capable of being flat towed before trying it. If you’re wondering whether or not you can flat tow a Jeep Renegade, the sad truth is that no, you cannot.
If you own a Jeep Renegade and are looking for a way to haul it behind your RV, now that you know it can’t be flat towed you’re likely going to be searching for some alternative methods. The next-best option that you’ll likely hear of is called tow dolly towing. A tow dolly is a small, two-wheeled trailer that supports the front wheels of your vehicle while the rear wheels remain on the ground. While this is generally the best answer for vehicles that can’t be flat towed, unfortunately the Jeep Renegade also can’t be dolly towed.
At this point, you’re probably wondering why you can’t do either of the two easiest towing options with your Renegade, and we’re right there with you. It’s a bummer that neither option works with the Renegade, but it’s for good reason. In both cases, flat towing and dolly towing, two or all four of your wheels are left turning while it’s being towed. The Renegade was built in such a way that the wheels can’t safely be rotating while the vehicle is off without risking damage to the entire drivetrain.
So, instead, your best option is to find a trailer in which all four of your Renegade’s wheels are safely placed on the bed of the trailer, not in rotation while you’re on the go. There are many different types of trailers available, including open trailers and enclosed trailers, each offering varying levels of protection and security for your vehicle.
If you’re looking for a one-time kind of towing, such as for a cross-country move, then there are other options that won’t require you to purchase a full trailer just to use one time. You can hire towing services or driveaway services. The former is where you hire someone else to tow your vehicle for you. They’ll use their own trailer and equipment and take your vehicle from point A to point B. The latter works the same except instead of towing your vehicle they’ll actually drive it to your destination for you. Make sure to weigh all of your options and your budget before deciding which option is right for you.
If you were considering a Jeep Renegade but having the ability to flat tow is a necessity for you, you might instead be looking for alternatives to the Renegade itself.
