Can you disable auto stop/start on a Jeep Wrangler?

Published on Sep 9, 2024 by Jim Glover Creative Team

The Jeep Wrangler is packed full of incredible content that enhances every aspect of the vehicle. From its power output to the comfort of its interior to its off-road capabilities and so on, there are hundreds of different features and technologies that will make sure you’re enjoying every experience you have behind the wheel of your Wrangler. But not everyone is going to like every single feature their Wrangler has, or at least not all of the time. For example, one great feature found on a ton of modern vehicles including the Wrangler is the auto stop/start system, but this is a highly polarizing feature of which not everybody is fond. So, if you’re in that camp, you might be wondering whether or not you can disable this automatic system in your Jeep Wrangler. We’re here to give you the rundown!

How does auto stop/start work?

Before we dive into how to disable the system, we thought we’d start by just giving you an overview of what exactly the system is and how it works. So, the auto start-stop system is, as we mentioned, a technology that has become widespread in the modern automotive industry, found in all kinds of vehicles not just on the Jeep lineup but throughout the whole market. What it does is automatically shut off the engine whenever the car begins idling and then restarting the engine when it’s time to get moving again.

The system works by detecting when your brake pedal is depressed and then waiting to see if the care gets out of gear. If and when it does, the system cuts the fuel and ignition to turn off the engine. Then, when it’s time to go again and you press the gas pedal, the system detects this and reverses these two actions to turn the engine back on so you can return to the road.

How do you disable the feature?

Disabling the feature is possible no matter what kind of Jeep Wrangler you have, but how to go about it will vary from model to model. There are four different steps we recommend taking to disable the system, but you can feel free to give us a call at any point to get some professional assistance. We’d be happy to help!

  1. Consult Your Owner’s Manual
    • First and foremost, you should check your owner’s manual to see what it has to say in the section about your auto stop/start system. If there’s a built-in way to disable the system, you should be able to read about it here and follow any steps it lays out for you.
  2. Press Deactivation Button
    • Certain Jeep Wrangler models come with a deactivation button that allows you to turn this system off completely. Find the button and press it to temporarily deactivate the system, but you’ll need to do this every time you drive the vehicle.
  3. Aftermarket Solutions
    • If your version of the Wrangler doesn’t have a deactivation button, or if you’d like a more permanent solution, there are aftermarket parts that you can get and install to permanently disable this feature.
  4. Bring it In
    • If you’re not comfortable with or can’t figure out any of the aforementioned steps, simply bring your Jeep Wrangler into us here at the Jim Glover CDJRF service department and we’ll walk you through your options.

We hope that this information has helped you figure out the best way to disable the auto stop/start system on your Jeep Wrangler. If you have any other questions, feel free to give us a call here at the service desk. We look forward to hearing from you!
