People all over the country are adopting the overlanding lifestyle. Whether it’s for a few days, a few weeks or even more permanently, overlanding has become a very popular activity that involves traveling long distances on dry land. It’s tied very closely to off-roading, which is why many people who choose to do their overlanding in big recreational vehicles also want to bring their everyday vehicle along. And that everyday vehicle? Typically an off-road vehicle or pickup truck. If this is something you’re interested in, then you’ll also want to learn about flat towing, which is an easy way to bring your Jeep model or RAM truck along for the ride.
Flat towing, also known as dinghy towing, is a method of towing a vehicle behind a larger vehicle, such as a motorhome or RV, without the need for a trailer. In flat towing, the towed vehicle is securely attached to the towing vehicle using a tow bar, which allows the towed vehicle to roll along smoothly behind the towing vehicle. This towing method is popular among travelers and outdoor enthusiasts who want to bring their vehicles along for road trips, camping adventures or off-road excursions without the hassle of dealing with a separate trailer.
One of the key advantages of flat towing is convenience. By flat towing a vehicle behind a motorhome or RV, travelers can bring their own vehicle with them on their journey, eliminating the need to rent a car at their destination or rely on public transportation. This provides a sense of familiarity and comfort, as well as the freedom to explore new places and attractions with their own vehicle at hand.
Another advantage of flat towing is cost-effectiveness. Instead of investing in a separate trailer for towing a vehicle, flat towing allows travelers to use a tow bar and towing accessories to bring their vehicle along. This can result in cost savings and reduced expenses associated with renting or purchasing a trailer, making flat towing a budget-friendly option for those looking to bring their vehicle along on their travels.
Flat towing also offers flexibility and versatility. Whether you're embarking on a cross-country road trip, camping in remote locations or exploring off-road trails, flat towing allows you to bring your vehicle along for the adventure. This flexibility enables travelers to access a wider range of destinations and activities, as well as to enjoy the convenience of having their own vehicle available for transportation, exploration and emergency situations.
The good news is that there are plenty of RAM trucks and Jeep models that can be easily flat towed, so if you already own one of these models you’re good to go or you can add these models to your list of options if shopping for a new vehicle. Last month we made a whole post dedicated to which Jeep models you can flat tow, so be sure to check out that blog for more details, but here are the Jeep models that can be flat towed:
As for the RAM brand, its three pain pickup trucks can all be flat towed. That means the RAM 1500, 2500 and 3500 are all excellent options for someone shopping for a new vehicle that can be flat towed. You can’t necessarily flat tow every single model though, so be sure to discuss this desire with your salesperson before purchasing a model. For example, you should only flat tow RAM trucks equipped with four-wheel drive as two-wheel drive models might get damaged if you try flat towing them.
You can feel free to give us a call with any questions that you have or to inquire about availability of a specific model. We look forward to hearing from you!
